MacRumors has posted an email that was sent by one of its readers to Apple CEO Steve Jobs and got response from the man himself. In the email, the reader who happens to be a concerned iPhone owner asked Steve that can he explain why passive location-tracking tool has been embedded in his iPhone. He also added that he might switch to a Droid because they don’t track their users.
In response to this email Steve replied that Android devices do record user’s current location and he shred the reports and said that the info about Apple recording the current locations of its users is false.
Q: Steve,
Could you please explain the necessity of the passive location-tracking tool embedded in my iPhone? It’s kind of unnerving knowing that my exact location is being recorded at all times. Maybe you could shed some light on this for me before I switch to a Droid. They don’t track me.
A: Oh yes they do. We don’t track anyone. The info circulating around is false.
Sent from my iPhone
This topic has been in news since it was revealed that iPhone and Android devices record user’s location and send that data back to their respective companies. Last week John Gruber said that iPhone’s location tracking and storing is just a bug and might be resolved in the next update. Other reports indicate that iPhone does not send this tracked info to anyone, even to Apple and just stores it in its memory.
