According to a site called PatentlyApple, Apple has patented a social networking service that is called ‘Places’. Previously Apple has been said to be working on a social networking service that will allow iOS users to find out where their friends are at the moment, and this ‘Places’ thing seems to be just it.
“Places is primarily about online social networking services related to a social networking site and will assist in locating people using GPS on Apple’s mobile devices.”
Apple has tried its luck in the social networking arena with the release of iTunes Ping but that unfortunately was not a big success and i fail to understand how this is going to be a game changer, because it will only work for iOS devices whereas we already have good services like FourSquare that work on all platforms and for all users.
But what we should keep in mind is it is just a Patent and might not even make it to its release, or can be entirely changed when it comes in its final form.
